Since the late 1800s
Thanks to the master craftsman Mario Ponziani, this became the most prestigious restoration workshop of the era. Masterpieces from all over Italy were restored here daily; it was here that the systems and techniques of the ancient masters were studied and understood. It is a long history, rich in charm and significant moments, as even in the 19th century, the Ponziani family was renowned as artisans specializing in the art of gilding in a workshop near Piazza Santa Croce in Florence.
THE ORIGINS
Giovanni Ponziani was the pioneer of the family’s artistic craft, instilling his values and passion into his three sons: Rodolfo, Mario, and Danilo. The brothers worked side-by-side in the original workshop until 1940, when Mario Ponziani chose to strike out on his own. He moved to the heart of San Frediano—Florence’s historic artists’ quarter—to establish his own independent restoration studio.
The Ponziani firm found its home on the ground floor of Palazzo Graziosi, a 16th-century estate neighboring the historic properties of the Marchesi Frescobaldi and Francesco Ferrucci. Over time, Mario Ponziani rose above the city’s many artisans, earning a reputation for his mastery of ancient techniques. He specialized in the restoration of gilded and lacquered furniture from across Europe, becoming particularly renowned for his expertise in the exquisite Italian lacquering styles of Venice, Genoa, and Sicily.
PIONEERS
In the immediate post-war era, Mario Ponziani had a brilliant intuition that would redefine the workshop’s future. While many dismissed traditional methods as obsolete, he leveraged his deep knowledge of ancient craftsmanship to launch what would become the firm’s hallmark: the creation of handcrafted furniture that faithfully reproduced antique pieces and precious objects.
This shift captured the attention of international architects and interior designers—most notably from the United States—who came to admire the Ponziani touch. Their acclaim steered the company toward a specialized focus on bespoke, full-scale furnishing projects, all meticulously crafted to order.
Major Works
The reproductions created by Studiolo Ponziani have been appreciated and commissioned by international figures and shipped worldwide, particularly Venetian-style chests of drawers and secrétaire desks. Among the most notable clients are Michael Schumacher, maestro Zubin Mehta, and prestigious boutiques such as Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue in New York.
Significant works have been carried out in luxury apartments in London, Venice, Monte Carlo, and many other cities. Antique dealers and collectors have been regular clients of the workshop, including the Galleria Bellini in Florence. Among institutional commissions, the Florence Monuments Authority (Soprintendenza) entrusted the workshop with restoration works in the royal apartments of Palazzo Pitti and in the Medici villas of Poggio a Caiano and Castello.
A reproduction of a herbal cabinet was exhibited at Liberty in London.
Over the years, the Studiolo has taken part in major international exhibitions such as the Salone del Mobile in Milan and Abitare il Tempo in Verona, receiving awards for its long-standing participation.
In the late 1960s, RAI produced a four-part documentary on antiques and restoration, directed by Ugo Gregoretti, with many scenes filmed inside the Studiolo.
In 1964, publisher Fabbri began issuing weekly installments of “Casa e Cucina,” offering readers the opportunity to purchase period-style furniture, with the Ponziani workshop among its suppliers.
In 1961, the organizers of the newly established Florence Biennale of Antiques commissioned Mario Ponziani to create an artistic concept for promoting the exhibition. Maurizio Ponziani produced a drawing of Palazzo Strozzi that became the Biennale’s logo for ten editions (over 20 years).
In 1996, the Florentine marchioness Bona Frescobaldi mentioned the Studiolo in the guide “Italy’s Finest,” listing it among the places to visit in Florence.
In 2019, some pieces from the Studiolo appeared in the RAI television series “Pezzi Unici,” starring Sergio Castellitto.
